Local Attractions: Located 35 km from Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, the resort is near Kirinda Beach and Yodakandiya Wewa (6 km), Bundala Bird Sanctuary (24 km), and Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara (8 km). Guests can enjoy walking and TOK TOK and visit nearby attractions.

The land was previously cleared for chena cultivation and also consisted of some scrub jungle. The previous occupants had little success with chena cultivation due to the harsh weather conditions and frequent threat of wild animals. Existing fauna include indigenous species such as malittan, kohomba, debara, ranawara, divul etc. In addition, other species such as maila, halmilla, wa, ehela, et demata have also been planted on the property. Selected fruit trees have also been planted. Green manure crops such as gliricidia have also been planted to provide raw material for compost and firewood for cooking purposes.

The Eco Retreat

The eco retreat will be divided into two contiguous areas.

Buildings (approximately 2 acres)
Wildlife and conservation area (approximately 3 acres)

Buildings

The number of cottages and cabanas will deliberately be kept low to ensure that a large percentage of the land is covered by vegetation, thus maintaining and increasing the biodiversity as a wildlife conservation area.

A qualified architect well-versed and experienced in traditional construction methods was recruited for the design and supervision of the buildings and landscaping.

Current Buildings

Three cottages consisting of bedrooms (with attached toilets) and outdoor sleeping areas have already been constructed as the first stage of the project. Each cottage is built with mud bricks, thatched with talipot fronds and has a semi cleared garden that merges with the scrub land and jungle beyond. The character of the traditional dry zone homes is reflected in the open ‘pila’ present in each bungalow. Traditional architecture and construction methods was used in all the buildings, which were constructed out of bricks, clay and soil. Natural ventilation and lighting is maximized to reduce energy usage. Thatch roofs using ‘pol athu’ and thala are used in most cases. Floors are a mixture of clay and cement.

A staff quarters; driver’s quarters and kitchen has also been constructed on the property.

Future Expansion

Three more A frame cabana and Four Tablet will establish as 2nd and 3rd stages 2 swimming pools 2 kitchen and restaurant will construct for each separate projects common living and dining area will be constructed after finalization of the first project These buildings will also be constructed using the same eco-friendly methods used in the current buildings. The proposed future cabanas will be based on luxury concept

Currently, three persons consisting of a cook, housekeeper and steward have been recruited, thus providing employment to the local community. A manager and 2-3 other staff will also be recruited after expansion of the eco-retreat.

Wildlife Conservation Area

Around 3 acres of the land will be converted back to jungle. This process has already begun and small herds of deer and wild boar and frequent visitors to the property. The existing foliage will be retained and many species of indigenous trees including palu, milla, kohomba, ranawara, divul, halmilla, debara, madan etc will be planted and maintained. A small rain water collection tank has also been constructed. Nature walks will be conducted for our guests in this area.
