Welcome to Orukem Nature Retreat
Sri Lanka, rich in natural beauty and biodiversity, offers excellent potential for eco-tourism, particularly around the Yala region. However, the area still faces a shortage of quality eco-friendly accommodation for both local and international visitors. Orukem Eco Retreat is located in Gurugoda, Kirinda (Hambantota District), a strategic location close to major attractions such as Yala National Park, Bundala, Sithulpawwa, Kirinda, Tissamaharama, and Katharagama. The site already includes a few eco-friendly bungalows and staff facilities built using natural, locally sourced materials with minimal environmental impact. Future development plans include additional cottages while preserving the natural landscape, enhancing biodiversity through reforestation with native species, and supporting the local community through organic farming and local produce sourcing.

Our Story
Orukem Nature Retreat was established with a vision to create a sustainable eco-tourism destination that preserves the natural beauty of the Yala region while providing meaningful experiences for visitors.
The property was carefully developed using environmentally responsible methods and natural materials. What began as a small eco-retreat with traditional cottages has evolved into a growing nature destination focused on conservation, community development, and responsible tourism.
The retreat is located in the Orukem area of Kirinda, just minutes away from Yala National Park, Bundala National Park, Sithulpawwa, Kataragama, Tissamaharama, and other cultural and wildlife attractions.
Description of Land
An approximately 5.00-acre property has been identified in the picturesque Orukem Ara area, strategically located within the wildlife-rich landscape surrounding Yala, Sri Lanka. The property enjoys a unique setting, bordered by the serene Orukem Wewa on one side and the access road connecting the Kirinda–Palatupana–Yala Road to the nearby lagoon (Kalapuwa) on the other.
Investment and Budget
The investment done through self-generated funds. Around Rs. 1.75 million has already been invested, the property not operated nearly 3 years. The renovation cost as follows.

The investor is having more than 25 years’ experience in the Hotel and Tourism industry Sri Lanka and overseas , Build -up several eco-resorts Sigiriya, And Sinharaja and other parts of Sri Lanka. And founder of Yala nature hotels ( pvt) Ltd presently managing 2 hotels in yala .
Disposal of wastes
The cottages are spread throughout the land. Hence, wastewater will be treated at source instead of centrally. Black water is treated anaerobically in two chamber septic tanks followed by soakage in a soakage pit. Grey water is used for sub-surface irrigation of the surrounding foliage. Water saving cisterns and taps have been installed to minimize water consumption.
All biodegradable waste is collected centrally and composted. No plastic water bottles are used. No plastic shampoo bottles etc. are provided, but instead reusable ceramic shampoo bottles are used. Non-biodegradable wastes such as plastics, aluminum tins and glass bottles etc., are collected, sorted and handed over to the nearest collection / recycling center. Whenever possible, guests are asked to take back their non- biodegradable waste, as practiced in many Wildlife Department bungalows.
